If you haven’t heard of Fortnite, you might just have been living under a rock for the last 6 months or so. Fortnite’s Battle Royale mode has taken over the internet, becoming one of the most popular games online. It’s adoption has been fuelled by the fact the game is free to play and can be played on almost every platform imaginable.
The popular Battle Royale mode is nothing new; it’s been present in other games such as PUBG and H1Z1. But Fortnite’s take on the genre has captivated a generation of players, with it’s cartoony play style and also rewarding high-skilled players.
It’s also a great game to watch. It’s currently the most streamed game on Twitch and YouTube videos that have anything to do with Fortnite are getting thousands of views. Content creators are flocking to the game, putting out daily videos and streaming for hours and hours. Whether Fortnite’s popularity can stand the test of time, remains to be seen.
Currently the top players play Fortnite on PC, using mostly desktops. But you can also run Fortnite on a laptop too, as long as you have a good capable machine. Fortnite is also available on PS4 and Xbox One, although cross-platform play between these two is not available (you can play PS4 to PC and Xbox to PC though).
To keep things fresh, Epic Games (the publisher behind Fortnite) has released a new mode you can play in Fortnite. It’s a crossover with Marvel’s Avengers franchise and allows you to play as the villain Thanos. The mode is time-limited, meaning it won’t be available to play forever but it comes at a perfect time when Marvel’s new Infinity War film has just been released and broken revenue records.
The mode is titled “Infinity Gauntlet” and it keeps much of the original Fortnite Battle Royale mode in place. A hundred players descend on the arena as normal, looking for loot and gear to kill others. But what’s changed is that the Infinity Gauntlet will spawn randomly on the map. Whichever player obtains the gauntlet first, will be transformed into Thanos.
Thanos doesn’t have any weapons and cannot be healed. But he does have his own super abilities which you can use to defeat other players with. These abilities include a jump-slam action, laser beams and being able to pummel players with your fists.
Thanos’s HP doesn’t regenerate and you can see Thanos from the mini-map at all times. When Thanos kills another player, his shield is regenerated. Players can damage Thanos using normal Fortnite weapons and if they manage to kill him, Thanos will drop his Infinity Gauntlet again. The cycle then continues, with players racing to get the Infinity Gauntlet to transform into Thanos until there is only one player left remaining.
The game mode itself is a lot shorter than the regular solo game mode. Games normally last around 15 minutes, whereas normal solo game mode lasts about 25 minutes. This is mostly due to the fact that Thanos can kill players quite easily and his abilities are stronger than any weapon in the game. For fans of the Avenger’s movies and comic books, this mode will definitely be a treat for them.
For your average Fortnite player? Well the mode is more of an “easy mode” type of gameplay. When you get control of Thanos and wield his super abilities, it becomes very easy to kill players. Those who struggle with solos might find this mode a bit more entertaining and easier to rack up kills. For players used to fighting it out with high-skilled opponents, this mode might get boring quite fast.
So what’s next for Fortnite? Is this crossover a sign of things to come? Will Fortnite have other crossovers with other franchises? It remains to be seen yet. You still can’t get any skins related to the Avengers in Fortnite yet, but this may change in the future if Epic can strike a deal with Marvel.
